Meet Pepita

One ear up, one ear sideways, and one little girl figuring out that people can be pretty wonderful. 🐾💕

Meet Pepita, an approximately 6-year-old long-haired Chihuahua with a face you won’t soon forget—and two ears that clearly have their own ideas about how they’re supposed to work! One stands straight up while the other has a charming little crook, giving her an expression that’s 100% Pepita.

Pepita and another little dog, Poncha, were found as strays in Ft. Pierce. They were nervous about approaching the kind people trying to help them, so they had to be safely trapped and brought to H.A.L.O. Pepita can take a little time to warm up, but once she feels comfortable, she shows her caretakers that there’s a sweet, silly little dog underneath that initial Chihuahua caution. She even lets them dress her up once she’s comfortable, which is a pretty good sign of the trust she’s learning to have in her people. ❤️

Pepita didn’t have much of a reaction to cats when introduced, so she may be perfectly content sharing her home with feline friends. Dogs are a little more complicated—she hasn’t been a big fan of them since coming to the shelter. We suspect shelter stress may be contributing to that opinion, and think she could potentially learn to coexist with another small, calm dog with a patient adopter willing to give her plenty of time and consistently work on their relationship.

We don’t know whether Pepita is housebroken or how long she was living outside, so she’ll need some patience as she learns what being someone’s beloved house dog is all about. She’s looking for someone who will let her take her time, earn her trust, and discover just how good life can be when you finally have a person of your own. 💕
