Luna's Story
Luna was brought to H.A.L.O. weighing only 2lbs. and her frail body did not have the strength to stand up any longer.
For the first few days, Luna was under intensive medical care and she devoured anything put in front of her. Sadly, her bloodwork revealed her organs had already started to fail due to lack of nutrition.
It only takes five days of inadequate diet for organ failure to begin.
In Luna’s case, giving her a bowl of food was not the only answer, she now required expensive and critical medical intervention in order to save her life.
Thankfully Luna’s parents found H.A.L.O. before it was too late!
As the cost of food and medical care continues to rise, pets are facing an uncertain future.
Today, over 50 million households are considered “food insecure,” and 70% of pet owners are worried about the increasing cost of care and how they will feed their pets.
Some pet owners have changed their pet’s healthy diet to a more affordable processed food, which can lead to health issues. While other pet owners are forced to make the heartbreaking decision to give up their animals, only to be met with overcrowded and underfunded shelters that cannot receive them.
Did Luna’s parents make the wrong decision? No. They loved Luna and after making the heartbreaking choice to give her up so she could receive the care she needed, they were turned away by other shelters because they were already overcrowded and didn’t have the resources to help Luna and her parents.
Were these shelters inhumane? No. In the past year surrender rates have increased by over 50% and everyone is doing their best to navigate the new reality of animal sheltering during these uncertain times.
