Spay & Neuter Vouchers

Why Spay/Neuter?

More than 70,000 puppies and kittens are born every day in the United States and over half are accidents. Kittens can get pregnant as early as four months and puppies as early as six months. This means many “OOPS” happen sooner than most think! By spaying and neutering your pet by the age of four months, you can help prevent this!

Thanks to the success of H.A.L.O.’s “Spayghetti & No Balls” Festival, we are excited to now offer our “Snip Happens” Voucher Program! With our partnership with Highlands Animal Hospital, the low-cost voucher provides a spay or neuter procedure, rabies vaccine, and microchip. For senior pets (7+ years), bloodwork is also included with the voucher. We aim to reduce pet overpopulation and help keep pets in their homes and out of shelters!

How do I get a Low Cost Voucher?

1.     Email Allyson King at [email protected] with the subject line “Snip Happens” and include your full name, pet’s name, and pet’s age and species.

2.     You will then receive an email with a link to pay for your voucher. Once payment is received, your voucher will be delivered by email within a few days.

3.     After you receive your voucher, you will have 60 days to schedule your appointment at Highlands Animal Hospital. Please present your voucher at the time of your appointment. If your pet is up to date on their rabies vaccination, please bring proof of vaccination to their appointment.

Will spaying/neutering my pet cause weight gain?
No. Just like people, pets become overweight from improper nutrition or lack of exercise. Good diet and exercise can help keep your pet at a healthy weight.
Will it change my pet’s personality?
Spaying or neutering is unlikely to change your pet’s temperament, basic personality or levels of playfulness and general activity. However, it can have a positive effect on some behavioral issues, especially sexual behaviors such as mounting, howling and the urge to roam. Leg lifting is also usually dramatically decreased. Despite what some believe, pets show no signs of “missing” mating or breeding.
If only females get pregnant, why do I need to neuter my male?

As they say, it takes two to tango and males are every bit as much a part of the overpopulation problem as females.

Additionally, male pets are more likely to run away in search of a mate, which puts them at a much higher risk of disease and injury. If left intact, males are also more susceptible to testicular cancer.

Will my male feel emasculated?
This is a human feeling, not one that your dog or cat experiences. However, they will be less likely to exhibit behaviors such as howling and marking.
Do I need to wait until my female has been through her first heat?
There is no medical research that states it is healthier to wait until your dog or cat has gone into heat. In fact, spaying them before their first heat greatly reduces the risk of mammary cancers and reproductive-related diseases. Spaying and neutering at any age can eliminate or reduce the development of reproductive tumors.
Is my pet too old to be spayed/neutered?
Dogs and cats can be fixed at any time during their life span. Your veterinarian can address any concern there might be about performing the procedure on an older pet. Remember, it may even be lifesaving!
